Hockey NSW and NSW Pride’s Greta Hayes wins the 2024 LGBTQ+ Role Model of the Year

Hockey NSW and NSW Pride’s Greta Hayes was awarded the 2024 LGBTQ+ Role Model of the Year at last night's Australian Pride in Sport Awards. This award recognises the critical role that LGBTQ+ role models play in sending a message of inclusion within sport.

Greta a member of the Australian Hockeyroos teams passion for inclusivity has been demonstrated on countless occasions, including last season’s NSW Pride, Pride in Pride round which Greta played a critical role in the success of the event.

Following the event, Greta posted a powerful post on social media, “Sport provides a platform to do good and make change. No matter who we are, every person has the right to play sport and feel safe/supported to do so. Pride round is about acknowledging the fact that across sports, and within Hockey, we haven’t always got it right. It’s a way of demonstrating our allyship, and making steps in the right direction, to pave the way for a more inclusive future.”

Further to her support for both Hockey NSW and NSW Pride, Greta is an AIS Thrive with Pride Ambassador and in March 2023, she initiated and supported the delivery of an international Pride match between the Hockeyroos and USA Hockey.

The Australian Pride in Sport awards which was hosted by Adam Hills is an event that acknowledges achievements around the inclusion of people with diverse gender and sexualities in Australian sport.

Hockey showcased why it is one of the industry leaders in inclusion with a record 8 Hockey organisations receiving recognition, including Hockey NSW being awarded Pride in Sport Index (PIS), Bronze Tier Status.

Hockey NSW’s affiliated club and partner Bentstix Hockey Club were awarded Silver Tier Status which was an impressive achievement for the club and Hockey Australia were recognised with the highest PIS tier being awarded Gold Tier Status.

Hockey NSW are looking forward to continuing to ensure that Hockey in NSW is a safe and welcoming sport that focuses on ensuring an inclusive environment for everyone.
