Hockey NSW Joins Forces with Regional Academies of Sport to Unveil the Futures Academy

Published Thu 14 Sep 2023

Hockey NSW is thrilled to announce an exciting expansion of our partnership with the Regional Academies of Sport (RAS). Together, we are embarking on a transformative journey that promises to shape the future of athlete development and performance within the Hockey NSW pathway.

The HNSW Futures Academy is an intiative carefully crafted to drive excellence and innovation in the world of hockey, as we set our sights on the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. With the unwavering support of RAS, this program will play a pivotal role in nurturing and elevating the talents of regional athletes from across the state.

Within this reinvigorated tier one program, RAS will assume the crucial role of providing Performance Support to our region’s most promising young male and female athletes. Their goal? To prepare these pre-elite athletes for the demanding rigors of their chosen sport at the elite level. RAS offers invaluable opportunities for budding athletes to access high-quality support and holistic development experiences that would otherwise remain beyond their reach.

While Hockey NSW will spearhead the coaching, skill acquisitin, and sport development aspects of the program, RAS will step in to provide off-field performance support. This support includes education in strength and conditioning, sports psychology and nutrition. The strength and conditining component is an integrated approach, covering functional testing, movement screening, athelte conditioning, and training load management. It’s a tailored service designed to promote enhance athletic development and foster a ripple effect for improved sports performance.

Brett O’Farrell, Chair of the Regional Academies of Sport, expressed his excitement about the partnership, saying, “To work with the state’s most promising young athelete’s ten year’s out from the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games is quite exciting, this program has been built to develop the next generation of Future Champions and we hope to witness many Kookaburra and Hockeyroos on our tv screens in the coming years originating from this program.”

Brent Livermore OLY OAM, High-Performance Manager for Hockey NSW, echoed this, stating, “Hockey NSW is pleased to announce an exciting shift with the alignment of partnership with the RAS that will help guide and steer the direction of the Futures Academy and pathway not only in Regional NSW, but across the state.”

“It is a well needed shift in the pathway to engage and align with all members and stakeholders in building the foundations required to implement a sustainable pathway across NSW”, Mr. Livermore added.

In addition to the tier one program, RAS will also operate a tier two development program within the regions. This intiative aims to identify talent and provide further opportunities for athletes along the pathway.

Together, we are shpaing the future of our sport and nurturing the champions of tomorrow.
