NSW Dominate Hockeyroo and Kookaburra 2024 selections

Hockey Australia this week announced their Hockeyroo and Kookaburra squads for 2024, a year that consists of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

NSW dominated both teams with a combine total of 15 NSW Players included in the squad announcements - 7 players in the Hockeyroos squad, and 8 NSW players selected in the Kookaburras 2024 squad.

Hockeyroos Head Coach Katrina Powell has named a 22-person, squad for 2024 that including 7 NSW players, Alice Arnott (Willow Tree, NSW), Jocelyn Bartram (Albury), Greta Hayes (Sydney), Kaitlin Nobbs (Newington), Grace Stewart (Gerringong), Mariah Williams (Parkes) and Grace Young (Grafton).

Powell said to Hockey Australia “There has been some really standout performances throughout the year, from the FIH Pro League Series, Test series against China and India, successful Oceania Cup Olympic qualifiers and the recent JDH Hockey One League,” Hockeyroos Head Coach, Katrina Powell said.

“Essentially this has enabled the National Selection Panel to select a squad with a really good mix of youth and experience, which is favourable leading into an Olympic year.

“The fact that the squad will again be centralised at hockey’s high-performance home in Perth is also very fortunate. The opportunity to have all the athletes together is something that the team and I are very excited about."

The Hockeyroos will start their 2024 campaign in February at the start of the fifth season of the FIH Pro League. You can watch all Hockeyroos Pro League matches live and free on 7plus.

A 27 person Kookaburras squad was announced by Head Coach Colin Batch, including 8 players from NSW, Tim Brand (Chatswood), Tom Craig (Lane Cove), Matthew Dawson (Killarney Vale), Blake Govers (Wollongong), Flynn Ogilvie (Wollongong), Lachlan Sharp (Lithgow), Ky Willott (Newcastle) and Goalkeeper Ash Thomas (Baulkham Hills).

Having made his debut for the Kookaburras earlier this year, Ash Thomas’s inclusion in the 2024 squad follows his exciting and dynamic NSW Pride Hockey One season where he was crowned both NSW Pride’s Members player of the season and the Players, player of the season.

Speaking about Ash’s selection Colin Batch said “Ash (Thomas) comes into the squad after some impressive performances, and as the standout goalie across the past two Hockey One seasons. Following his debut earlier this year, he continues to refine and develop his performance, and therefore joins us full of confidence.”

2024 is set to be an action packed year of Hockey for both the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras, with the Paris Olympics in July by far the pinnacle event of the year.
