Selections

In addition to the 300m fitness test, these skills are included in a selectors assessment of field players:

  • Physical fitness
  • Agility speed
  • Sprinting
  • Technical skills
  • Distribution (accurate)
  • Receiving (confident)
  • Ball control (precise, uses scanning)
  • Elimination (decision making)
  • Tackling (appropriation)
  • Tactical skills – recognises and exploits situations correctly
  • Remembers set plays
  • Supports others (effectively)
  • Recognises press situations (positions quickly)

 

Goalkeepers

The selectors can consider the following skills in their assessment of goalkeepers:

  • Fitness is an important element:
    • Agility
    • Flexibility
    • Speed over 16 yards
  • Skills include:
    • Feet saves - close in, stretch and use of the kick
    • Hand save - stick side, left hand, in air and on ground
    • Sliding and diving
    • Rebound and reflex saves
    • recovery for 2nd phase
    • Penalty corner defence - upright and lying down, set up
    • Decision making
    • Appropriate communication to defense
