From Player to Mentor: Laura Reid's Next Chapter with the NSW U21s

Published Sun 04 May 2025

After a decorated hockey career which featured stints with the NSW Pride, Laura Reid (née Gray) is back in the hockey world - this time off the pitch, stepping into the Manager role for the NSW U21 State Team.

Reid had originally hoped to play on in 2024, but life had other plans, welcoming her third child in December. “I would have loved to go around again,” she said. “But falling pregnant made the decision pretty easy!”

While watching the U21s sometimes reignites her competitive spark, Reid knows the reality of what it takes to return to top form. “After three kids and a few comebacks, I understand the effort and frustration that comes with trying to get back to that H1 level.”

Away from hockey, life is full throttle for Reid, working full-time at Sport Integrity Australia, casually as a Correctional Officer, and raising three kids under six.
“It’s pretty high octane,” she laughed.

Despite the busy schedule, the pull of the hockey community was too strong to ignore.

“The sport is great, but it’s the people that make it special. High-performance environments are so unique - you just don’t get that anywhere else. When the opportunity came up to work with Hangers (James Hanger, U21s Coach) and the team, it just felt right.”

Stepping into the role has been smooth, helped by the fact Reid already knew most of the players and staff. “There haven't been any big surprises yet, though once the tournament starts, things will definitely ramp up!”

She’s also found a great partnership with coaches James Hanger and Corrina Aitken, working closely as a tight off-field unit. Her experience as a former teammate to many of the girls has been a real advantage too.

“They know I’ve been in their shoes recently, so I can offer a different perspective. They’ve been great at respecting the difference between being a teammate and being part of the staff.”

It’s an exciting time for the team, with several players pushing for Junior World Cup selection and plenty of fresh talent stepping into the high-performance scene.
“This group is fit, fast and smart. They’ll be tough to scout because they can adapt so quickly.”

For Reid, her focus is simple: handle the logistics, keep the players confident, and help them enjoy the experience. “Of course we want gold, but more than that, I want them to look back and say, ‘That was the best trip.’”

With her experience, energy and leadership, Reid is playing a crucial role in setting the team up for success - both now and into the future.
