Hockey NSW Announce Association Review

Published Tue 26 May 2026

Hockey New South Wales have this week commissioned an independent review of the Association Models across the State in the context of governance, growth and sustainability, in line with the organisations Strategic Plan 2023-2026.

Hockey Associations play a critical role in the development and growth of the game across all levels of participation, and this review seeks to assess the current structures and practices in place across the 27 State Associations, with a view to providing practical recommendations that will enhance performance, participation, and long-term viability, for the overall benefit of the sport in New South Wales. It is planned to engage other significant stakeholders in the process to assist with a full review of the hockey landscape including competitions.

“The purpose of this review is really about seeking to grow, strengthen and sustain the sport into the future,” said Hockey New South Wales Chief Executive Officer, Carolyn Campbell.

“It is an opportunity to understand and clearly define the role and function of Associations within the Hockey NSW ecosystem and identify opportunities for alignment, consistency, growth and performance improvements”.

“The last review of Associations occurred in 2014, so it is both important and appropriate governance, to re-visit our structure to ensure and understand that our Associations are fit-for-purpose, effective and sustainable,” added Campbell.

The review which begins this month will be conducted by Darren Simpson, a respected sports administrator in NSW who is independent of Hockey NSW. Darren has a strong understanding of sporting and member based environments. This review is expected to be finalised in time for the State Association Forum in August.

The process will include surveys, interviews, workshops, benchmarking, desktop and data analysis across a range of key aspects including:

  • Governance and Leadership
  • Operations and Management
  • Financial Sustainability
  • Particiaption and Pathways
  • Stakeholder Engagement

Direct communication to relevant parties will follow shortly.
