Hockey NSW hosted its 2024 Community and High-Performance Umpiring and Officiating Awards at Rydges Newcastle, recognising the ongoing commitment and contribution of umpires, officials, and volunteers across the state.
Returning after a brief pause, this year’s event acknowledged not only the 2024 recipients but also those from 2022 and 2023, highlighting consistent efforts in Umpiring and Officiating over the past three years.
The awards evening provided opportunity to acknowledge individuals and groups who have contributed to the ongoing operation and development of hockey in NSW.
Newly appointed Hockey NSW President Alex El Shamy made her first official appearance at the event, where she acknowledged the work of volunteers and their role in sustaining the sport. She referenced the challenges faced by communities in Northern NSW during recent floods, including Manning Valley, and recognised the efforts of those who supported local recovery.
Also in attendance were CEO Matt Bulkeley, COO Richard Griffiths, and Vice-President Corrine Rochester, who reiterated Hockey NSW’s continued focus on community engagement and support for grassroots hockey.
The event welcomed award winners, Hockey NSW Life Members, and their families and supporters. A live stream was provided to ensure those unable to attend in person could still view the proceedings.
A notable moment of the evening was the presentation of the Community Long Distinguished Service Award to Anthony Lewis of Manning Valley Hockey Association, recognising over 25 years of contribution. During the 2022 floods, Mr Lewis used annual leave to assist in local recovery efforts. In his address, he spoke about the value of community and service.
To close the evening, CEO Matt Bulkeley delivered a speech reinforcing the importance of local involvement and outlining the organisation’s vision for the future of hockey in NSW.
Hockey NSW extends its congratulations to all award recipients and looks forward to building on these achievements in the years ahead.
