Hockey NSW congratulates Peter Sweeney and Kenny Little on being recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List, with both receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division.
The recognition highlights the invaluable role volunteers and community leaders play in strengthening hockey across New South Wales. Through decades of service to the sport and their local communities, Peter and Kenny have created opportunities for countless players, supported clubs and associations, and helped build stronger communities through hockey.
Peter Sweeney OAM
A respected figure throughout the Newcastle hockey community, Peter Sweeney's contribution to the sport spans generations.
Peter proudly represented New South Wales at Under 21, Senior and Masters level and has remained heavily involved in the administration and development of hockey long after his representative playing career concluded. He was a member of the Men's Veterans Interim Committee and has played a key role in shaping opportunities for players across multiple age groups.
Within the Newcastle Men's Hockey Association, Peter currently serves as Treasurer and continues to provide strong leadership and guidance to the local hockey community. He is also a Founding Member and former President of Crusaders Hockey Club and has held numerous volunteer positions with West Hockey Club throughout the years.
Despite his extensive administrative contributions, Peter remains an active participant in the game as a current Newcastle Men's Masters player, demonstrating his enduring passion for hockey.
His OAM recognition is a fitting tribute to decades of service, leadership and commitment to hockey and the Newcastle community.
Kenneth Little OAM
For many in Port Macquarie, Kenny Little is synonymous with community spirit.
Well known through his local business, Ken Little's Fruit and Veg, Kenny has spent years supporting community initiatives and giving back to the region he proudly calls home.
Within hockey, Kenny's contribution has been equally significant. He is a Life Member of both the Port Macquarie-Hastings Hockey Association and Port City Hockey Club, recognition that reflects his longstanding commitment to the growth and success of the sport in the region.
Kenny also served as President of Port City Hockey Club, helping guide the club through many successful years while fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for players, volunteers and families.
His dedication to both hockey and the broader Port Macquarie community has left a lasting impact and makes this national recognition richly deserved.
Hockey NSW congratulates Peter and Kenny on this prestigious honour and thanks them for their outstanding service to hockey and their communities.
