Six NSW athletes have been named in the 2025 Australian Under 21 Squads, announced by Hockey Australia in the wake of a successful Under 21 National Championships in Bendigo for the NSW representative teams.
Georgie Smithers and Ryan Woolnough have been selected in the squad for the first time and will join continuing members Jared Findley, Toby Mallon, Makayla Jones, and Amalia Patterson.
Jillaroos and Burras squads have also been selected for a European tour in June, with national development squad member Dylan Downey selected in the Burras touring squad. Toby Mallon and Makayla Jones were also selected for the touring squads.
The selection is especially meaningful for Ryan Woolnough and Georgie Smithers, who have now aged out of the Under 21 program. With their 21st birthdays approaching later this year, this will be their final opportunity to represent Australia at the junior level – a fantastic way to cap off their Under 21 careers.
In addition to the national squad announcements, several athletes have also been selected for the upcoming European tour.
Dylan Downey and Toby Mallon have both been named in the Burras touring squad. Downey had a standout tournament in Bendigo, captaining NSW to a silver medal and earning Player of the Tournament honours.
In the Jillaroos squad, Makayla Jones has also been selected to tour Europe. Makayla is no stranger to the Jillaroos system, having been part of the program in previous years. Her experience and composure will be a valuable asset throughout the tour.
The Jillaroos will begin their tour with a training camp in Antwerp, Belgium, before competing in a Four Nations Tournament in Berlin from 20–24 June. The Burras will take on Belgium and the Netherlands in warm-up matches ahead of their own Four Nations Tournament in Berlin from 10–27 June.
Hockey NSW congratulates all selected athletes and wishes them the best as they head to Europe and continue their journey towards the Junior World Cup.
